On the S55, the top mount charge air cooler is the heart of the intake cooling system. It is a water to air unit that pulls heat out of the boosted air before it reaches the engine, and the factory cooler runs short on capacity fast once you add power or string together hard laps. This CSF cooler replaces it with a core roughly 60 percent larger, built around CSF's cast end tank design with air dividers molded into both the hot and cold sides to even out flow across the whole core. You get more heat transfer, lower intake temps, and a charge cooling circuit that holds up under sustained load instead of heat soaking after a few minutes.
It fits the S55 powered F8X cars, covering the F80 M3, the F82 and F83 M4, and the F87 M2 Competition and CS. The cooler is a true drop in fit that sits in the factory location and uses the OEM quick connect water fittings and sensor ports, so there is no cutting, no adapters, and no tune required. This version comes in CSF's crinkle black powder coat, which looks clean and holds up to the heat and grime of the engine bay.
It does its best work as part of a fuller cooling plan, paired with an upgraded front mount heat exchanger to drop coolant temps before they reach this cooler, but on its own it is still a large step up over the OEM unit for anyone tracking the car or running more boost. For a platform as prone to heat soak as the F8X, it is one of the more effective bolt on changes you can make to keep power consistent lap after lap.
