Öhlins has been the benchmark in damping since 1976, and the Road & Track range brings that motorsport pedigree to a system you can drive to work and then flog at a track day without changing a thing. For the G8X M2, M3, and M4, this is the coilover that finally ends the compromise between a comfortable street car and a genuinely fast one.
The heart of the system is Öhlins' patented Dual Flow Valve (DFV) technology, and it is what separates these from every other coilover in the class. DFV gives the damper a consistent oil flow path on both compression and rebound, so the tire resettles onto the pavement almost instantly after a bump instead of skipping and losing grip. On the street that translates to a supple, OEM strut like ride over broken pavement and expansion joints. On track it means the car stays planted and predictable right at the limit, easier to balance on the edge of grip and quicker to respond to your inputs. When you get to the circuit, you simply turn the golden knob clockwise into race mode, which firms up low and high speed compression and rebound together across all four corners.
Öhlins also engineers out the two things that ruin most coilovers over a hard session: heat and friction. A temperature compensating needle bleed valve expands as the dampers heat up, holding a consistent damping rate lap after lap so the car feels the same on lap fifteen as it did on lap one, no fade, no wandering handling. Internally, the piston shafts and damper walls are micro finished and plateau honed for the lowest possible friction, which is a big part of why the ride quality is so refined despite the performance on tap.
Build quality is exactly what you would expect at this level. The inverted monotube design uses lightweight aluminum construction that comes in roughly 22 pounds lighter than the factory suspension. Ride height is set independently of spring preload thanks to a separate damper length adjuster, so you can lower the car properly without sacrificing suspension travel or bottoming out, a mistake cheaper coilovers force on you. The carbon steel bodies are salt spray tested to ISO 9227 for 240 hours, the dampers are fully rebuildable and re valvable at any Öhlins service center, and the whole system is TÜV approved and backed by a 2 year worldwide warranty.
Key specifications:
- 25 click adjustable damping via DFV, road and race modes
- Height adjustable, roughly 5 to 35mm lowering range
- Front spring rate 100 N/mm (570 lb/in), rear 190 N/mm (1085 lb/in)
- Inverted monotube, uses factory top mounts
- Approximately 22 lbs lighter than OE suspension
- Rebuildable dampers, TÜV approved, 2 year warranty
IMPORTANT: This system is drivetrain specific and uses a different part number for RWD and xDrive. Select your drivetrain from the dropdown above before ordering. The RWD option covers the M2 and rear wheel drive M3 and M4, and the xDrive option covers the AWD M3 and M4. If you are unsure which your car is, message us before purchasing.
Since these cars run electronic adaptive dampers from the factory, add the optional Öhlins EDC Cancellation Kit to clear the dash warning lights and error codes when the factory adjustable suspension is removed. It plugs into the original suspension controls with no additional programming required.
