On the E9X M3 the hydraulic power steering works hard, and on track or in a supercharged car the fluid gets hot enough to thin out and fade, which shows up as a lighter, vaguer wheel right when you want the most feedback. The factory cooler is a low efficiency mechanically bonded unit that was never built for that kind of duty. This CSF cooler replaces it with a CAB brazed plate type core built on CSF's AC condenser technology, using a high pressure multi channel microtube and a dual pass six row layout that adds about 83 percent more surface area than stock and tests roughly 40 percent more efficient.
It is a true plug and play fit that uses the OEM lines, mounting brackets, and AC condenser with no modifications. CSF added the extra core height toward the top of the cooler rather than the bottom, so it still clears aftermarket supercharger kits, heat exchangers, and auxiliary coolers that tend to crowd the space below the factory power steering cooler. The headline fit is the E9X M3 with the S65 V8, covering the E90 sedan, E92 coupe, and E93 convertible, and the same cooler fits a range of other E8X and E9X models as well.
If you autocross, track, or run forced induction on an E9X, keeping power steering temps down keeps the steering consistent and protects the pump and fluid over time. For a part that bolts in with no fuss and clears the popular supercharger setups, it is an easy upgrade to run alongside the engine and transmission coolers on these cars.
